Show Some Hub Love

The Importance of Comments

It is vitally important to the Hub community to comment on hubs. I do not mean overly long, verbose but, pithy, not trite. It is especially true for some hubs that request within the context of their hub feedback on the subject they are discussing. The nature of some hubs is exactly that, a discussion where the author is requesting something more from the reader.

Reasons for commenting:

  1. Comments that spur conversation and discussion with others, and especially with the author will help you get recognition for valuable comments left on others hubs.
  2. If people see that you leave valuable comments on their hubs or, readers of those hubs,  then you might gain readers of your own. The thinking here is: your comments can be like advertisement for your hubs, a preview of sorts.
  3. Building relationships with authors is a great concept in the Internet era. From an authors perspective it is a wonderful thing to be encouraged by readers. You put something out there and you get something back is like hugging someone and getting a return hug. Feels great. It is the kind of thing that keeps writer's writing.
  4. Not only is it encouraging to know you are being read and valued by your readers but, comments also can help shape the direction of a writer's next hub; or edit and revise a current hub.

There are four of my reasons why commenting on Hub Pages is important (please let me know if you have more). I want to also mention the type of commenting that should be done. When I said earlier that comments do not need to be overly verbose and long, well that doesn't mean they can't be but, in contrast short pithy comments probably do the job twice as well without bogging down the comment log on the hub. This is something I am guilty of, long comments, but I do strive to keep them relevant and encouraging. Make your comments meaningful and relevant.

I also believe that it is important for the author of the hub to respond to comments made on their hub. It is the considerate thing to do. Sometimes comments will be missed but, as a general rule it builds a stronger readership and loyalty with your readers.

What shouldn't be done:

  1. Do not disrespect the author by being vulgar or, attack them personally.
  2. Check over your comment for errors. I get so ahead of myself that I neglect this one all the time.
  3. Respect the comments of other readers using the guidelines of rule one.
  4. Avoid being argumentative for the sake of arguing. It is one thing to have a differing viewpoint, but another thing to argue with no point. Discussing keeps communication open and arguing puts up walls.
  5. Be relevant. If the hub is talking about cats, don't go so far off topic that you start lollipops and raindrops (though there is nothing saying these topics are mutually exclusive).

Comments are an important if not vital part of the Hub Pages community. Stay awhile and make friends. You may learn something you want to know about, which may be the very thing to inspire a new hub. Please feel free to comment here and thank you for reading.

Very well written and needed hub. We all are in a hurry these days but at least owe the author of the hub we just read a moment of analysis. Don't we desire and expect the same? It is just common courtesy. Voted up and useful...

Thank you both for your comments. I decided to write this hub because I saw another hub that wrote 'please leave comments below'. It made me realize how important comments are to the whole community of Hub Pages. It is probably the second most important next to the Hubs themselves.

Hey SaMcNutt, you touched on the aspect of being argumentative and it's unfortunate that that is going to happen. It cannot be avoided. You will run into people who are so far out there in their thinking, that reality is completely misunderstood to begin with. So, you will most certainly see people placing comments that provoke arguments. I always reach a point, where I am forced to tell them that they need to read other hubs I have written, so as to open their mind even more than they have already. But, I have no issues. I mean, even my comment to your hub here, could be looked upon as a argumentative, but actually isn't. When people read things, most of the time they are not reading the words in content or context, but insert a perception of their views, unknowingly. They don't always read the intended context, because of ego or chosen ignorance. Thumbs up! Good read. :)

Cagsil, You proved the point expertly. While your comment could be viewed as argumenative by someone who reads it it is not however argumenative for the sake of arguing. Actually I would consider your point as warmly discussed. You engage the reader rather than put up a wall. It would be interesting to delve into the variation of argumenative behavior in discussion.

What you outline about reading the words in content or context is an issue. We all bring huge perceptive bags with us and it is a practice to set them aside and try and understand another perspective. I often discover differing views that make me uncomfortable but I still find value in challenging my own perspective rather than attack someone elses.

Anywho, I am starting to drift. You have given me more to think about. Thank you, thank you for your comment.

Hi SA, I am always amazed at your range of topics. I talked about this in my "How to succeed in hubpages..." and may I add a fifth. As I learned growing up in Texas, it's simply good manners. Very well said, very much appreciated. =:)

Winsome - It is ggood manners. It is something that can be reiterated from time to time. I understand that sometimes people just don't know what to say but, it is always nice to even get a friendly hello from a reader.

I really appreciate the comment. I will check out your hub.Cheers!
